WDTV Live Hub
Updated version of the WDTV Live with added internal 2.5" HDD bay. Available only with a 1TB drive pre-installed. The chipset is the same Sigma 8654 as the original WDTV Live, now with a firmware update to deliver Gigabit ethernet and HDMI 1.4 (it's the same chip, so an update to the older player should be possible). The remote is an improvement on the original. The Gigabit ethernet has been reported as not being much of a speed improvement on 10/100. The 8654 chipset is considerably less powerful than other similarly priced players (using Intel CE / Sigma 864x).
The player software is a big improvement. You get a media scraper built into the player allowing you to catalogue and easily search all your content (although reports are that it is slow on large collections - see comments below). There is a web remote for iPhone/Android. More on-demand services have been added.
As usual for Western Digital products this is a very capable player, albeit with some niggles.

Not a bad media player. Biggest gripes are: 1) No direct USB connection to a PC, 2) Very slow LAN connection - USB2 direct would be way faster. 3) Waiting time for it to compile its media list after unplugging power (I unplug it when not using it to extend HDD life). The good : 1) It plays everything I have thrown at it so far including stuff other people have said it did not play in other comments - folders , m2ts etc. Software upgrades come out fairly regularly and I do them unlike My in laws Toshiba Stor.e.tv+ which has never had a software upgrade and will not play files that mine plays. 2)Picture quailty better than Toshiba as well - done side by sides on same TV. 3) Operation is a doddle - even my electronophobe parents can operate it and my 8 year old son has no trouble finding what he wants on it. Jukebox FAIL! January 25, 2011 - 21:03
Awesome graphics and good streaming. Thumbnail scraping is horrible along with network share updating. You have to reboot the box to update network shared content. January 25, 2011 - 20:43
Awesome picture quality. Streaming is great. Thumbnail scraping is plain awful. Does not update network shares unless you reboot the box. Pandora app looks good. January 25, 2011 - 17:24
I purchased one of these for my sister. It handled all file types, although I don't have blue ray. However, I could not get it to work with 2 TB USB hard drives. It seems to assume 1 TB or less, just like the internal HDD. I had to copy to a smaller drive, then I could sync them or just play as is. I could not find this limitation in the user manual, so advice would be welcome. I can connect the same 2TB drive to my original WD player so it is not the external drive. January 07, 2011 - 23:04
