WDTV Live 2011
Western Digital follow their usual WDTV release schedule (every 2 years before Christmas) to release a new WDTV Live. The main updates are in the form of additonal on-demand services, taking the breadth of offerings closer to the Roku, AppleTV, or Popbox. Thankfully, as with previous WDTVs, format support is still wide so this player will play virtually everything. DTS-HD MA is currently only partial and some may also miss HDMI 1.4 and 3D support. The user interface is similar to that used by the WDTV Live Hub and is great looking and very easy to use. We are presuming that the chipset is Sigma 8670/8671.
The WDTV players have always represented a great balance between the latest technology and mainstream usability. This model is no different. There is no other player that can match it's mix of multi-format file support and on-demand content.

Regarding 'mkv stutters', does this happen only when playing vids thru Wifi/Lan, or even through USB? April 27, 2012 - 22:33
My thoughts on WD TV Live 2011 after a few months (1.07.18) Other than that the wd tv live 2011 is very usable. If only they could offer the Media Library and Dashboard as an option, without the loss of Favorites (folders, moviews, online services, shoutcast stations, weather locations etc....) What has that to do with a Media Library? Please! May 03, 2012 - 00:53
I am working on latest fw with telnetd enabled (1.07.18 gen3). fw is squashfs with block size 132 kb. In /etc/init.d/S45nettune there is telnetd startup. Also have done md5 checksums. No I need to rebuild squashfs (mksquashfs). For that I need linux distro on virtualbox. Telnet will open fw to you. Will be back later. Hope to find some time. Cheers May 06, 2012 - 11:44
The firmware is ready but I cannot flash it back into the wd tv live gen3. The firmware is 32 bit md5 + squashfs 3.1 (block 132 kb) + 2kb something. Think that last 2kb something is the problem. It must be something encrypted. It is not type yaffs2, cramfs, squahsfs, rom1fs etc. That is probably why there is no custom fw for this device already. The good news it that when flashing goes wrong an usb stick with original fw works when the screen "Insert a USB drive with firmware to recover your WDTV" Anyone? May 13, 2012 - 03:04
Regarding 'mkv stutters', does it happen when watching through USB or only Wifi or LAN? February 18, 2012 - 11:53
Problem with stuttering in most MKVs with my new WDTV LIVE STREAMING latest firmware 1.06. NO stuttering at all with my older WDTV live on firmware1.02 This is with a USB disk. (NOT NETWORK STREAMING). iso's, vobs and mt2 are playing fine,. December 29, 2011 - 20:50
Using WD TV Live streaming media player 3rd Gen. Firmware version is 1.04.12, my HDD is 3.5" Seagate 2TB in Vantec NexStar SuperSpeed USB 3.0 Hard Drive Dock with power supply. Connection with my WD is very difficult. I have to restart several times the box and the HDD, and even then when it recognized, have problem with playing. Stops for no reason. MKV plays for 2 minutes only. Switched to Western Digital My Book Essential 2 TB USB 3.0. Same **** problem! January 01, 2012 - 04:50
Apparently needed to use FRONT USB port. Wow. January 04, 2012 - 15:10
Try the new firmware version 1.05.18. December 29, 2011 - 05:56

Does anyone know if it is possible to turn OFF the WIFI? December 17, 2011 - 22:43
WiFi cannot be turned off, but you can choose between wired and wireless connection. December 11, 2011 - 02:00
Hi.. All, I have a question about WD TV Live 2011, out side the cover box wrote HDMI 1,4 , it is treu?? if yes, it can play ISOs Blueray 3D? December 17, 2011 - 22:40
WDTV Live Streaming is HDMI 1.4 compliant and is able to play 3D content in hardware, but the current firmware doesn't have this feature yet. December 19, 2011 - 23:58
My understanding is that it cannot support blu ray 3D. It might support MKV3D. December 22, 2011 - 11:24
With new firmware version 1.05.18, the WDTV Live Streaming Media Player has Vudu 3D working with 3D TV's. December 11, 2011 - 01:54

halooo. my name is ronald from indonesia. i have a question about WD TV LIVE STREAMING. is wd tv live streaming does support MKV3D are...? November 11, 2011 - 11:04
again: anyone? anyone? bueller? November 16, 2011 - 05:54
Yes it has a "go to" where you type in the time. Or if the video supports it, a chapter selection also. Not sure about syncing of subtitles, but there is an audio syncing option. November 16, 2011 - 06:14
I just checked again. Yes while viewing a movie, pushing the option button to adjust the subtitles, under the color and size it lets you adjust the subtitle "delay" or "advance". But I don't know if it works on certain movies or all of them. November 02, 2011 - 05:48
how com wd decided not to put FLV in their codecs..it's the most popular format for video besides MKV...many older player than this new sigma player already support FLV codecs.... November 08, 2011 - 06:59
I've yet to come across a media player powered by a Sigma chip that can play FLV files. You'll probably want a Realtek player for that. November 28, 2011 - 18:43
"[FLV is] the most popular format for video besides MKV" Actually, AVI and MPG are far more popular than FLV. I can't remember the last time I've seen FLV video files when looking for movies or TV shows... pretty much everything in high-def is encoded in MKV or WMV, and everything in standard-def is in AVI or MPG. November 02, 2011 - 04:32
How come flv extension is not supported, many older player support play flv. November 27, 2011 - 17:23
Who cares about FLV? Flash is dead. October 31, 2011 - 10:31
does this have a "go to" or "time seek" function when watching video? can you adjust the synching of subtitles? these are both features i missed in previous wdtv releases. October 25, 2011 - 09:39
Does this play MKV's with compressed headers? Leave a Comment
