Medion Life E85015 HD (86162)
Budget player that has been spotted for sale in German, Irish, and UK Aldi (a supermarket). Uses an early 1073DA version of the Realtek 1073 chip that does not support DTS downmixing. The interface is an early Realtek firmware with little modification. As with many of these basic Realteks, it works perfectly well but will not be pretty. Think Windows 3.1 file manager. Performance is always OK from the Realtek players and this is no exception.
Update December 2010: A new version of this player that will downmix DTS (probably 1073DD chipset) is now available. It is the same as the original except for DTS audio, and suffers the same drawbacks as the original.

Received one for xmas. Wondering if there is any way to add NAS access via network to download movies from a pc to attached usb hdd. Having to unplug usb hdd to transfer movies is a pain. Yes, I know it can stream via UPNP but with Win7 can't seem to get it to work. January 30, 2011 - 12:39
hi there dose this device support windows media center many thanks seb January 01, 2011 - 17:28
Another firmware release this week. Adds new UI (cosmetic changes only) and restores H.264 playback. Download link December 15, 2010 - 11:36
Does not support DTS. however, as of December 16 2010 there is a new version at UK Aldi which is advertised as supporting DTS. Same model number as before but presumably using a newer version of the Realtek chip. @Chris - replicated h.264 fault with July 2010 firmware. December 20, 2010 - 07:13
Do you know if the players that have just gone on sale in Australia are DTS capable? I am having trouble networking - it keeps asking for Net User Id and password? using a lan cable through a router into an xp machine Any help would be appreciated. January 27, 2011 - 08:08
I am trying to use the 'NET' option over a WLAN in W7, but am asked for a 'Net User Id' and password, any advice appreciated! August 26, 2010 - 10:24
Hi guys, August 23, 2010 - 18:58

Hi all, Cheers, March 10, 2010 - 12:12
There is new firmware for this box, as of February 2010, on Medion's German website. Adds support for wi-fi dongles and Windows 7 shares. February 16, 2010 - 15:54
Thanks for the reply, unfortunately not applicable to me anymore. Turns out the one Aldi sells here is not the Medion but 1 from enVivo which I can't find any info on anywhere aldi.nl/OFFER_NL_MI/OFFER_07/OFF06.SHTML February 10, 2010 - 16:46
Does anyone tested if it plays RM/RMVB files? Dutch Aldi sites states it does but online manual and here do not list it. February 10, 2010 - 16:54
It almost certainly does. All the Realteks we've come across play RMVB. It's probably not listed in the manual because RMVB is uncommon in Europe. Our detailed specs have come from the Medion specs so in this case the omission of RMVB on our site doesn't mean anything. January 27, 2010 - 14:05
I got this player but wen i tryed to play mkv files there is onli picture and no sound. Ive tryed it through av cables and Hdmi cables on different tv's but no joy....can any1 help?? January 27, 2010 - 20:18
Sounds like the mkv file has DTS sound. .mkv is only a container. It can contain video / audio encoded in a variety of formats. This player cannot decode DTS audio to stereo. This is the problem with this player compared to the better 1073 players.. August 25, 2010 - 06:58
I have same problem. Player doesn´t support DTS coded sound. January 25, 2010 - 12:29
Can this play x264 MKV files? January 25, 2010 - 14:02
Yes. Unless the MKV has only a DTS audio track or is encoded at an absurd bitrate it will play. Leave a Comment
