Medion Life E85015 HD (86162)
Budget player that has been spotted for sale in German, Irish, and UK Aldi (a supermarket). Uses an early 1073DA version of the Realtek 1073 chip that does not support DTS downmixing. Lack of DTS audio is the only limitation compared to the usual 1073DD, so if you can live without it then this player offers a very low cost route to decent performance.
The interface is an early Realtek firmware with little modification. As with many of these basic Realteks, it works perfectly well but will not be pretty. Think Windows 3.1 file manager. The big selling point of this player is the price. It is the cheapest Realtek networked player you can buy in both the UK and Europe. Other low cost and technically very similar options include the Hisense MP800H and Sumvision Cyclone MKV. If you want DTS downmix then the cheapest player is the Asus OPlay HDP-R1 at ~€90 /£80, or alternatively click here for a list of all DTS Media Players.
There is nothing special about this player except the price. If you don't want to order online, don't care about DTS, and live near an Aldi, then this might be just the player for you.

There is new firmware for this box, as of February 2010, on Medion's German website. Adds support for wi-fi dongles and Windows 7 shares. February 16, 2010 - 15:54
Thanks for the reply, unfortunately not applicable to me anymore. Turns out the one Aldi sells here is not the Medion but 1 from enVivo which I can't find any info on anywhere aldi.nl/OFFER_NL_MI/OFFER_07/OFF06.SHTML February 10, 2010 - 16:46
Does anyone tested if it plays RM/RMVB files? Dutch Aldi sites states it does but online manual and here do not list it. February 10, 2010 - 16:54
It almost certainly does. All the Realteks we've come across play RMVB. It's probably not listed in the manual because RMVB is uncommon in Europe. Our detailed specs have come from the Medion specs so in this case the omission of RMVB on our site doesn't mean anything. January 27, 2010 - 14:05
I got this player but wen i tryed to play mkv files there is onli picture and no sound. Ive tryed it through av cables and Hdmi cables on different tv's but no joy....can any1 help?? January 27, 2010 - 20:18
Sounds like the mkv file has DTS sound. .mkv is only a container. It can contain video / audio encoded in a variety of formats. This player cannot decode DTS audio to stereo. This is the problem with this player compared to the better 1073 players.. January 25, 2010 - 12:29
Can this play x264 MKV files? January 25, 2010 - 14:02
Yes. Unless the MKV has only a DTS audio track or is encoded at an absurd bitrate it will play. Leave a Comment
