Egreat S1A Update & recovery problem
Hi, i'm from Mauritius.
i bought the Egreat S1A a month back from ebay.com.
I like the product very much.
I tried the several ports available on the device (HDMI, Component, Composite, Sata, USB, Optical Audio Out). All worked perfectly.
I tried the HDMI on my neighbourÃÔ 42 LCD, played 1080p MKV Transformers, 720p Ironman. Image and sound was very good. No image freeze, etc., except that the Reverse button when pressed says Unsupported. Instead, I used time seek button.
1080p & 720p movies even play smoothly on my ordinary Sony 29 TV through Component OUT.
However, the player doesnÃÕ play all movie image files with .nrg extension.
This was a problem for me as I have many Tamil movies with subtitles on an external HDD.
Some days ago, while surfing the net, I found that a recent FW update (1.09.023) was available.
I downloaded the manual (Pdf format) and the update from the net, and carried out the update exercise.
This is the most stupid thing I did.
Since then my S1A is out of order. I am continuously being scolded by my wife and 2 children.
After updating was successful, I am getting the ţoot screen Loading ...? afterwards nothing is being displayed on the TV screen, not even the normal main menu.
As per the manual the player was supposed to reboot by itself. It did so, but then I donÃÕ understand.
I searched many forums, took their advice, downloaded several versions of updates, 1.09.012, .018, .020, .023 and also tried recovery softwares one by one .012, .020 & .023 but all in vain.
Could anyone help, pl.

Same here, (without the wife bit). When newer firmwares are installed, especially using the firmware upgrade tool during boot-up, the player automatically defaults into HDMI output. Press the 'tv' button on the remote once it has appeared to hang after booting, this will scroll through component/composite/hdmi outputs.
The answer is in the new egreat forum, but not obviously so.

I bought this player about a month ago after reading the reviews here. I live in China and was able to pick it up for about US$100. Overall I am very happy. It is mainly getting used to play shows for the kids with occasional movies.
I am by no means a network expert and found it easy to set up and get it to find my NAS. The menu system is decent if not brilliant and easy to navigate. I wish there was a way to remove options from the menus that I don't need. It would be easier for my 4 year old to manage then.
As far as video I have been happy. It plays everything I have put at it with the exception of one mkv file and strangely one iso. The picture is great even running only through component video. Can't really speak to the audio since I am just running it straight to the TV, again it is mainly for the kids, and there is no receiver hooked up. The remote is good, Chinese and English, although the buttons are small and no backlight.
Would I buy it again? Yes. I might buy another one to replace the HTPC I use to watch all my movies and shows on.

Mostly happy with the player, but two things:
in fairness, this is not the fault of the player, but how the chuff do you make it connect wirelessly with win7? I had it before, but a re-install has left me struggling to figure the settings. I can see the hard drive attached to the player from windows, but not the drives shared by windows from the player.

Secondly, and this one annoys the bejeesus out of me: NO GAPLESS PLAY!!! or even playlists. However, if the player connects to WMP and that does the playlists and gapless streaming, then could someone let me know how?

Great site, by the way.

Looks like s1a.andboson.com is trying to get the WDTV Live firmware working on the S1A now... should be good.

Hello,

Check in eBay (com/co.uk/de). In Germany you can also go to idealo.de or guenstiger.de.

EG-S1A: There is now a new FW out (31/12 2010). I think this is the best yet. Still there are some problems, one of the biggest is that it takes forever to open a folder with lots of files (mp3, flac etc). Fix this and the S1A is a great choice!

Have a nice 2011!

Good hardware but the FW sucks big time and Egreat seems not to be able to fix it. :-(

Before buy this product, read the users opinion about this company's support...

I think it's more relevant how the level of support has been for this particular product, which has been good, rather than that for a different product entirely. Many companies have had problems with Realtek SDK3, hence why SDK4 has now started to appear (including in a round-a-bout way for the Egreat players).

Received my S1A a few days ago and have just had chance to try it out..

After owning an Xtreamer Mk1 its a major improvement.

Nice Plug adaptor
More connections
Turns on and off properly when using the remote.
Streams YouTube properly
Better quality video..
Fanless.
HD Audio

Brilliant... and I think it will get better.

Deffo recommend it against the Xtreamer Pro and Side winder.

Does it decode Dolby TrueHD and DTS HD Master Audio into multichannel PCM or just stereo? Also, can it play MKVs with multichannel FLAC (which should be output as multichannel PCM)?

Dolby TrueHD / DTS-HD MA are either bitstreamed or decoded into stereo, so no to multichannel PCM.

MKVs with multichannel FLAC play but are always downmixed to stereo.
