Dune HD Smart D1
Updated and physically smaller version of the Dune Base 3.0. Can be expanded with matching HDD or BD add-ons called 'Smart HE' (HDD enclosure), Smart 'BE' (BD-ROM enclosure), and Smart 'ME' (2*SATA enclosure). There is also a BD-ROM version called Smart B1. This D1 version has an LCD screen, so forgoing the easy tray HDD access of the H1.
The new Dunes are basically repackaged versions of the Dune Base 3.0. The chipset used is the same, the rest of the hardware is very similar, and they use the same firmware.
None of the Dune players have any on-demand support, and the default interface is very basic. There are now other equally capable players with a longer feature list, but at a lower price.

Hello iboum, You mentioned that other player are performing better at lower price. Could you please short list those devices? March 31, 2011 - 09:21
Hi. There are a number of 864x based players with the same basic format / performance characteristics but more feature-rich firmwares. The NeoTV 550 and Popcorn Hour A-210 spring immediately to mind. Then you have Intel based players, again with similar performance but much wider capabilities (decent web browser, scraping on the player, on-demand services). All these players are either a similar price to the Dune D1 or significantly cheaper. The oncoming Realtek 1185 based players will again have similar performance (format support, bit rates, 7.1 audio) but will have better base firmware and will be vastly cheaper, perhaps less than 80 Euro in some cases. The Dune players were great machines, and still represent a very solid choice, especially if you really need BD-ISO menus (one area in which the Dunes still stand out). However, these days they suffer heavily from the very basic firmware used. Other players have caught up with key Dune features such as 7.1 audio whilst adding much better on-box media management and online streaming services. The Dune players use a chipset that is now almost 2 years old. This is not ideal, but the bigger problem is that the firmware has it's roots even further back than that.. In my humble opinion Dune need a new and modern firmware. March 26, 2011 - 09:13
I recommend streaming from a server using Zappiti movie software. It's so easy to browse movies and tv shows. Has a similar look to windows media center but with much more control. March 25, 2011 - 17:38
Dune HD Smart D1 January 19, 2011 - 19:29
The interface is OK. A bit simple. Physical unit is nice as all get out and the in movie navigation features are perfect! But the networking is very weak compare to any of the Popcorn Hours not to mention the Seagate and WD players for all their flaws, connect effortlessly with just about everything. And the file support is horrible. If you are just playing iso and MKV with new codecs this player is for you. But I was genuinely amazed at all the files this thing would NOT play. Mpegs, relatively new AVIs and buggy as hell. Not talking Indeo here. If you tried to play a file it did not like, you had to reboot it. I have a large old collection from other countries from Anime to Documentaries and do not want to spend 3 years transcoding. For that kind of money I was happier with the WD hub. I have purchased almost every device out there and the only ones I don't end up returning are the PH and WD. I have problems with both of them mind you, but they are minor compared with other player's issues. Was esp. angry with the WD Live netflix issues that seem to finally be resolved after 9 months. Without being political, the 'Brand Country' is not China but Taiwan January 13, 2011 - 14:52
whether it supports external subtitles, regardless of the accuracy of the name subtitles January 09, 2011 - 21:04
The machine plays everything what I need (dvd iso, bd iso, hd audio)...but it gets warm a little with WD EcoGreen 2T (case about 40 degrees). In my opinion...too small case with no fan. March 26, 2011 - 09:05
I agree. I placed an 80 mm fan on top grill and it worked a treat. Not very attractive, but I have my player situated in a cabinet so I don't see the fan at all. January 04, 2011 - 20:52
Does anyone know how to install a wireless pen (D-Link DWA 140) on a DUNE HD Smart D1? November 29, 2010 - 08:22
Shame it doesn't support HFS+ for Mac users, NTFS, FAT, limits the device to only Windows and Linux ppl. December 11, 2010 - 06:06
The application Macfuse will allow NTFS with read and write capability January 12, 2011 - 03:03
I've just got one of these. If your HDD is partioned with Apple Partition Map it will read HFS HDDs. November 24, 2010 - 22:34
Just received my Smart D1. Tried it out and am most impressed. Have used the WDTV units before and they don't come anywhere close to having the features the Smart D1 has. November 24, 2010 - 21:16
Hi, Does anyone know if the Dunes is able to keep playing started music while changing to a slideshow of pictures for the purpose of having background music. The Asus O!Play HD2 did so. I found that to be a great feature, but unfortunately i had to return it because of a firmware chip problem and I want to use this chance to go for the dune (the best?) player now. Thanks ! November 25, 2010 - 08:04
AFAIK the dunes will not let you do anything whilst music is playing without the track ending. You can't even browse for other music. Prehistoric I know! November 26, 2010 - 19:56
hm, at least they have it in the top ten on the firmware wish list. lets hope for it. Videos are one thing. Pictures the other and at least as important. Slideshows with Music possibility is a must. Raises the value and avoids people sleeping away after picture number 50. They will live up to 500 November 18, 2010 - 01:54
They are going to be available in December sometime. November 17, 2010 - 18:38
Hi, where can we get one of these? anyone know? November 14, 2010 - 20:57
Anybody got their hands on one of these just yet? If you have, please post your first impressions here. Thanks! December 01, 2010 - 21:56
I got one but returned it because i found it had alot of lipsync issues on alot of my content. Apart from that i was impressed by the unit. Fast and responsive. But the lipsync problems were bad. Leave a Comment
