WDTV (Western Digital TV) (mk1 / generation 1)
Not the first Media Player, but the first to be truly user friendly whilst also having a top specification and a low price. Great online third party community support. Comprehensive playback options. Has a better user interface than most of the machines that came after it. Drawbacks are the lack of network connectivity and no support for DTS or any other HD-Audio formats.
This page is for the the first generation version of the WDTV, model 'WDAVN00' / 'WDAVP00BE'. A new version of the WDTV launched in November 2009 using the newer Sigma 8655 chip and with DTS downmix support. Check out our WDTV (MK2) page.
The generation 1 WDTV has now been superceeded by technically much superior players, including the gen2 WDTV and the WDTV Live. But if you can find one of these very cheap, and all you want is something to play mostly SD and some MKV video on your TV, then this will do the job.
