What is a Netbook?
A Netbook is a portable computer that distinguishes itself from a laptop computer by not having a physical media drive (CD,DVD,Blu-Ray). Netbooks are also usually less powerful, smaller in screen size and keyboard, lighter, thinner, and with greater battery life than a typical laptop. Most importantly, Netbooks are usually cheaper.

The term 'Netbook' was first used to describe the Asus EeePC range of mini laptops that were launched in late 2008. Since this date many similar machines have been launched to create a whole new market segment.

The first Netbook

We feature Netbooks on our site because they have made a significant step towards making redundant the use of physical media in computing. Although an external drive can be used, it was with netbooks that many people first came to realise that software content delivery could be exclusively via digital means.

Netbooks today provide astounding battery life and are perfect for carrying with you at all times for whatever purpose. With the advent of 3G mobile broadband, a 1kg / 2.5lb Netbook can offer you fully capable web-enabled computing wherever you end up. It is a misconception that Netbooks are only useful for browsing the internet. All Netbooks are easily powerful enough for almost any everyday home/office task. The latest models are even capable of playing the latest games.

Sometime soon there will no longer be a distinction between Netbooks and laptops. Laptops will shed their physical drives and all will become one.

Since the first Eee was released, netbooks have got steadily bigger, to such an extent that it is now difficult to establish the difference between a laptop and a netbook based on old measures such as screen and keyboard size.

For the purposes of this site, we classify as a netbook anything without a physical media drive, and having a screen size of no more than 12.1". We aim to provide complete coverage of every netbook ever made.
