Graphics Chips in Netbooks
After the processor, the graphics chip is the second most important factor in Netbook performance. For traditional Netbook light use such as web browsing and word processing, any graphic chip would be adequate. However, with Netbooks getting larger screens and more performance, the uses they can be put to are widening. Developments in graphics chips have allowed some newer Netbooks to play modern games, and decode HD video (so allowing use as a Media Player). This page gives a run down of historical developments and information about Netbook graphics chips.

Intel GMA 900
Launched in 2004 and integrated into Intel's 910G, 915G, and 915Gx chipsets. Operates at 160-333Mhz.

Intel GMA 950
Launched in 2005 and integrated into Intel's 940GML, 945G, 945GU and 945GT chipsets. Operates at 400Mhz. This is by far the most commonly used graphics chip in Netbooks.

Intel GMA 500
Launched in .... and integrated into Intel's 'Poulsbo' (UL11L, US15L, US15W) Atom processor chipset. Although only clocked at 100-200Mhz has inbuilt 2D and 3D acceleration.

Intel GMA 4500
A laptop chip offering better performance than any of the Intel integrated solutions. Launched in 2008. The 4500MHD version will allow the decoding of 1080p HD video. Operates at 400-533Mhz. Not really a Netbook CPU and has a higher power draw than the integrated solutions.

Nvidia ION
Launched in 2009, the ION is an integrated platform comprising an Atom CPU and a modified GeoForce 9400M graphics chip. It operates at 450/1100Mhz and is substantially faster (claimed 10 times) than the Intel GMA 950. ION based Netbooks are capable of decoding 1080p HD video. An integrated VIA Nano CPU / ION chipset is coming at the end of 2009.

VIA Chrome9
Launched in 2007 and offering performance of roughly half an Intel GMA950. Operates at 250Mhz.

AMD Radeon X1250
A laptop chip operating at 350-400Mhz. Launched in 2007.
