Update. WDTV LIVE + Xtreamer Firmware 2.0

No blog posts for a while so here’s an update.

It’s mid month and so far in October we’ve seen 4 players launch. A couple of Realteks (Patriot Box Office, DViCO Tvix 6600) and, more interestingly, the first 2 Sigma 8655 players. The Eminent EM7075 launched with barely a whisper, and even now we are struggling to find information about it, or retailers selling it. Arriving in a much more visible way was the WDTV Live. Despite all our fears it has turned out to be a stunning machine. The new Sigma 8655 is a noticably more powerful chip than anything before it bar it’s 864X cousin. To see such a chip in a product launched at $119.99 is incredible. A couple of weeks after launch users have had time to thoroughly test out their WDTV Lives and no big problems have been discovered. We expect this player to do very well in the run up to Christmas..

The other big bit of news is the leaked release of Xtreamer firmware 2.0beta. This was long awaited since the big drawback of the Realtek chipset players is the ugly interface. We’ve had a chance to test it out and we like it. There are (so far, it is a leaked beta) no huge features added but everything just works better on an HDTV. The difference a pin sharp interface can make to an already functional product is incredible. Over on the Xtreamer forum there have been hints that a decent media jukebox / internet radio might sneak into the final 2.0 release. Adding these would make the Xtreamer almost perfect.

The comparison table and the data behind it have been further enhanced with columns for DVD-ISO and Blu-Ray ISO support. http://www.iboum.com/artkill/tablesort.php

We’ve added an iboum shop link to the navigation bar. This uses Amazon and allows us to pick out the best products from Amazon worldwide and present them to you for purchase. If you’re thinking of buying something Media Player related give it a go! The page should default to your local Amazon automatically, but if not there are country links at the top. http://www.iboum.com/aSTORE.php
