The Perfect Media Player

Approaching the end of 2009, it is a good time to open a discussion about where Media Players are heading. It is now clear from the volume of devices being launched that Media Players have a bright future. During 2009, many more people have discovered the simplicity and convenience of having a massive library of digital media content available from one central location.

Most of the traditional issues facing Media Players have been resolved. New players will play virtually every file without breaking a sweat, the problems with DTS have been resolved, more advanced HD-Audio support is on it's way in many players, and perhaps most importantly prices have been slashed. In short, we are seeing the technology mature. Media Players are slowly becoming a product for the average consumer and not just for a bunch of AV geeks(!)

So, what are the key issues facing Media Players in 2010 and how can these devices be pushed further into the mainstream?

Key issues:

• User interface. Most Media Players still have interfaces that are stuck in geekworld. Now that players are technically capable, the first device to have an interface comparable with Apple TV will sell bucketloads.

• DRM. Probably insurmountable in the short term, and perhaps not a problem for those who download a lot. Many people do download music legally though, especially those in the mass market. Media Players must find a way to play DRM'd files.

• Music playback. It surprises us how Media Players are so rubbish at audio playback. Devices like the Logitech Sueezebox are much more successful than Media Players yet contain technically inferior hardware and cost more. All it would take is a proper jukebox with covert art, a front mounted screen, and (in our dreams) a TFT screen Bluetooth remote. We keep expecting this area to be conquered but the Media Player manufacturers remain blind to it.

• On-demand content. Whilst many of us will have large libraries of digital content, most people will not. The great thing about Media Players is their versatility. We need players that are capable of streaming movies, TV, and music on demand from both free and paid sources.

The PopBox and the Boxee Box go some way to achieving the above goals. Boxee interface: www.boxee.tv. PopBox interface: www.electronista.com.

Interresting times!
